This property is an Edwardian Arts and Crafts house originally designed by the renowned architect E J May. 

Our client purchased the property because of this historic character but was mindful that it required modernisation. They also wanted to add open living spaces and a large master suite.

The existing building offered limited opportunity for large areas of glazing and unified spaces but a large empty area to the side of the building called for a modern extension to complement and enhance the older house.

The original arts and crafts house is separated from the contemporary extension with a glazed slot. This serves to make the new addition clearly distinct from historic property while also allowing light to enter the hallway and living areas below.

The form of the extension continues the geometry of the typically low Arts and Crafts eaves lines. By siting the extension to the vacant area to the side of the house and setting it back from the main facade, it does not compete with the locally listed building. However, by extending beyond the building to the rear, a substantial quantity of additional floor space is gained without destroying the character of the main house. The only major change to the main house was the relocation of the stair.

At the first floor the extension provides a walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite to the first floor master bedroom. Below it accomodates a generous kitchen with hidden pantry, dining area and comfortable seating near to the substantial garden. Towards this outdoor area the modern addition angles, offering views all the way to the far corner of the plot. In this corner lie a swimming pool and a large garden room that contains a gym and an outdoor kitchen.

The use of materials aims to consider the qualities of the Edwardian architecture. The extension is faced in brickwork and tiles that compliment the existing brick walls and tiles roof of the main house.
