This unique property had been in the family of our clients for nearly a hundred years, originally as a butcher’s shop with rooms above. They invited us to design a small two storey house in the backyard and secure a challenging planning permission.
The limited site was hemmed on all sides, locally listed and situated within a strict conservation area in the London Borough of Islington. We faced challenges to provide sufficient natural light without any street facing façades the small site and the planning requirement for sufficient living space called for a unique design solution.
Rather than allocating a single area for a small patio garden, the open space instead wraps around the house and weaves in and out of the living room and kitchen. The offset of the building envelope from the boundary along with strategic location of skylights results in a light and airy space which feels much larger than it actually is.
