This unique property has been in our clients’ family for nearly a century, originally as a butcher’s shop with rooms above. They invited us to design a small two-storey house in the rear garden, and secure planning permission for the project.
The property is located within a strict conservation area in Islington, North London, and listed locally. It’s also hemmed in on all sides. On such a small site without a street-facing façade, we were challenged to design adequate living space with access to sufficient natural light.
Rather than restrict the garden to a single area, we designed wraparound landscaping that weaves in and out of the lounge and kitchen. Setting back the building from the property boundary and incorporating strategically located rooflights results in a bright, airy space that feels much larger than it is.
