Complete redesign of a five story terraced house
Why? This family was living in their house for about a year and on initial conversations told us that they feel their house is very dark and crowded. However the house was actually very generously sized. We conducted a daily use analysis, looking at how our clients currently use their space and revealed that an astonishing 90% of the time was spent in just 10% of the space. The dark lower ground floor level accessed via a dark hallway, was the main family space and had too many functions; The kitchen, dinning area, play area, entertaining and admin were all cramped into this floor whereas the wonderfully lit double reception on the floor above was rarely used. The design challenge was to find a way of accommodating the unused space within the used areas while bringing as much natural light down to the basement. Together with our clients, a simple and bold design decision was taken which completely transformed the house and the way it is being used. A mezzanine level was introduced by cutting off a section of the never used ground floor. It created both visual and physical connection of the two floor and was located to allow maximum daylight down to the basement level.
‘The project was extremely collaborative, we always felt listened to, but they( scenario) gently nudged us to take some brave decisions and we are so pleased they did. We wanted a beautiful house but more than that we needed it to be a functional family home - the end result is just that beautiful and functional.'
