Dark wood extension of an interwar house
Why? Our clients, have purchased this inter - war semidetached house and lived in it for about six months before appointing us. They wanted to completely change and extend the existing dark and unused ground floor, which had two sitting rooms and an old conservatory. Their ambition for the space was the simpler the better having no children but two cats, they wanted some fun spaces for the cats, but for themselves they just wanted space, with almost no furniture or decorations.
A simple and clean space is almost more challenging to create than a ‘busy’ heavily designed space. Every detail is extremely important as well as the choice of materials and views throughout the house as this is all that is actually being experienced. We introduced very clean elements with a little twist to give the space a more designed feel. A hidden-when-open door is the only barrier within the ground floor open plan and a ‘‘window’’ fireplace opens both the reception area and the kitchen, creating glimpses between spaces. A single wall division provides privacy for the shower room and acts as a catwalk on the top for the cats to enjoy. In order to create a perceptual separation in the open plan we lowered the kitchen floor and installed polished concrete floor. A central island provides some additional workspace and flexibility for the rest of the space as the kitchen table can slide and hide in it.
‘We really enjoyed working with the team at Scenario Architecture. Very happy with the design and result. Directed us towards an excellent builder to do the work. It seems the transition from the design phase to detailed plans a builder could execute was exceptional and our builder never mentioned any issues, problems, or vague items within the drawings.'
